At 2 A.M., my wife shook me awake.<\/p>\n
“Honey!”<\/p>\n
I groaned and rolled over.<\/p>\n
“What?”<\/p>\n
“I think there’s a burglar downstairs.”<\/p>\n
That got my attention.<\/p>\n
A little.<\/p>\n
“Call the police.”<\/p>\n
She frowned.<\/p>\n
“I heard footsteps.”<\/p>\n
I listened.<\/p>\n
Nothing.<\/p>\n
The house was silent.<\/p>\n
I buried my face back into the pillow.<\/p>\n
Five minutes later, another shove.<\/p>\n
“Honey, seriously. I heard something.”<\/p>\n
With all the enthusiasm of a man being dragged into work on a Saturday, I got out of bed.<\/p>\n
I grabbed the baseball bat from the closet.<\/p>\n
Pulled on my slippers.<\/p>\n
And began what I imagined would become my heroic final stand against crime.<\/p>\n
I checked the hallway.<\/p>\n

The kitchen.<\/p>\n

I even looked behind the shower curtain.<\/p>\n

Still nothing.<\/p>\n
Then I stepped outside.<\/p>\n
Cold air.<\/p>\n
Empty driveway.<\/p>\n
No suspicious cars.<\/p>\n
No strangers.<\/p>\n
No burglars.<\/p>\n
Satisfied, I returned upstairs.<\/p>\n
My wife was sitting upright in bed waiting.<\/p>\n
I set the bat down.<\/p>\n
“Nobody’s there.”<\/p>\n
Instead of looking relieved, she looked disappointed.<\/p>\n
Actually disappointed.<\/p>\n
That immediately felt strange.<\/p>\n
“Aren’t you happy?” I asked.<\/p>\n
She crossed her arms.<\/p>\n
“That’s it?”<\/p>\n
I blinked.<\/p>\n
“What do you mean, that’s it?”<\/p>\n
“You just checked the house and came back?”<\/p>\n
Now I was confused.<\/p>\n
“What exactly was I supposed to do?”<\/p>\n
She stared at me.<\/p>\n
Then delivered the sentence that changed everything.<\/p>\n
“I thought maybe you’d notice.”<\/p>\n
“Notice what?”<\/p>\n
She sighed dramatically.<\/p>\n
“The new haircut.”<\/p>\n
I just stared at her.<\/p>\n
“The what?”<\/p>\n
She pointed at her head.<\/p>\n
“My haircut.”<\/p>\n
I looked.<\/p>\n
Really looked.<\/p>\n
And suddenly realized her hair was about eight inches shorter.<\/p>\n
My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n
“Oh.”<\/p>\n
Wrong answer.<\/p>\n
Very wrong answer.<\/p>\n
“Oh?”<\/p>\n
She narrowed her eyes.<\/p>\n
“I spent three hours at the salon today.”<\/p>\n
I was now fully aware that the burglar story had merely been a setup.<\/p>\n
A trap.<\/p>\n
An ambush.<\/p>\n
A highly organized operation.<\/p>\n
And I had walked directly into it.<\/p>\n
“You didn’t notice at dinner.”<\/p>\n
I stayed silent.<\/p>\n
“You didn’t notice while we watched television.”<\/p>\n
Still silent.<\/p>\n
“You didn’t notice when I asked what I thought of it.”<\/p>\n
I searched desperately for a defense.<\/p>\n
Nothing appeared.<\/p>\n
Then she delivered the finishing blow.<\/p>\n
“My own mother noticed immediately.”<\/p>\n
That hurt.<\/p>\n
Because her mother notices everything.<\/p>\n
Including things that haven’t happened yet.<\/p>\n
I attempted recovery.<\/p>\n
“It looks beautiful.”<\/p>\n
Wrong again.<\/p>\n
She folded her arms.<\/p>\n
“Now you’re only saying that because you got caught.”<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, she wasn’t wrong.<\/p>\n
At this point I was losing badly.<\/p>\n
Then I noticed something.<\/p>\n
On her nightstand sat a small gift bag.<\/p>\n
“What is that?”<\/p>\n
She rolled her eyes.<\/p>\n
“The second clue.”<\/p>\n
Apparently she’d left it there since dinner.<\/p>\n
Inside was a framed photo of us from ten years ago.<\/p>\n
Before the haircut.<\/p>\n
Before the gray hairs.<\/p>\n
Before our kids turned the house into organized chaos.<\/p>\n
Then I finally understood.<\/p>\n
This wasn’t about hair.<\/p>\n
Or burglars.<\/p>\n
Or clues.<\/p>\n
It was about being noticed.<\/p>\n
Life had become busy.<\/p>\n
Work.<\/p>\n
Bills.<\/p>\n
Responsibilities.<\/p>\n
Routines.<\/p>\n
We’d fallen into the habit of seeing each other without really looking.<\/p>\n
I sat beside her.<\/p>\n
Took her hand.<\/p>\n
And for once stopped trying to defend myself.<\/p>\n
“I’m sorry.”<\/p>\n
She looked skeptical.<\/p>\n
“I mean it.”<\/p>\n
Then I told her everything I should have said earlier.<\/p>\n
That she looked beautiful.<\/p>\n
That she always did.<\/p>\n
That somewhere between schedules and responsibilities I’d stopped paying enough attention.<\/p>\n
And that she deserved better than that.<\/p>\n
The room became quiet.<\/p>\n
Then she laughed.<\/p>\n
“I can’t believe you searched the entire house.”<\/p>\n
“I checked behind the shower curtain.”<\/p>\n
That made her laugh harder.<\/p>\n
Eventually she rested her head on my shoulder.<\/p>\n
And just like that, the crisis was over.<\/p>\n
No burglar.<\/p>\n
No danger.<\/p>\n
Just a husband who failed an unexpected test.<\/p>\n
The next morning I woke up early.<\/p>\n
Made breakfast.<\/p>\n
Bought flowers.<\/p>\n
And complimented the haircut before she said a single word.<\/p>\n
She smiled.<\/p>\n
Victory at last.<\/p>\n
For both of us.<\/p>\n
And now, whenever she wakes me up in the middle of the night claiming she heard something downstairs, I don’t grab the baseball bat first.<\/p>\n
