A married couple was fast asleep when the wife suddenly nudged her husband awake at 2 a.m.<\/p>\n
“Honey!”<\/p>\n
He groaned.<\/p>\n
“What?”<\/p>\n
“I think there’s a burglar downstairs.”<\/p>\n
Half asleep, he rolled over.<\/p>\n
“Call the police.”<\/p>\n
Then he went right back to sleep.<\/p>\n
A few minutes later, she shook him again.<\/p>\n
“Honey… I heard footsteps.”<\/p>\n
With a dramatic sigh, the husband dragged himself out of bed.<\/p>\n
Wearing nothing but his boxers, he grabbed a baseball bat and marched downstairs like an action hero.<\/p>\n
He searched the kitchen.<\/p>\n
Nothing.<\/p>\n
Checked the living room.<\/p>\n
Nothing.<\/p>\n
Looked in the garage.<\/p>\n
Nothing.<\/p>\n
Finally he returned upstairs.<\/p>\n
“Nobody’s there.”<\/p>\n
His wife frowned.<\/p>\n
“Are you sure?”<\/p>\n
“Positive.”<\/p>\n
She looked disappointed.<\/p>\n
Very disappointed.<\/p>\n
The husband noticed immediately.<\/p>\n
“Why do you look upset?”<\/p>\n
She crossed her arms.<\/p>\n
“Because you didn’t look hard enough.”<\/p>\n
He blinked.<\/p>\n
“I checked every room.”<\/p>\n
She shook her head.<\/p>\n
“No, you didn’t.”<\/p>\n
“Yes, I did.”<\/p>\n
“No.”<\/p>\n
The husband sighed.<\/p>\n
Then marched downstairs again.<\/p>\n
This time he checked closets.<\/p>\n
Behind curtains.<\/p>\n
Under furniture.<\/p>\n
Even inside the laundry room.<\/p>\n
Still nothing.<\/p>\n
When he returned, his wife somehow looked even more frustrated.<\/p>\n
The husband stared at her.<\/p>\n
“Okay, what’s going on?”<\/p>\n
She hesitated.<\/p>\n
Then said:<\/p>\n
“Maybe there wasn’t a burglar.”<\/p>\n
“I know there wasn’t.”<\/p>\n
She took a deep breath.<\/p>\n
Then confessed.<\/p>\n
“I just wanted to see if you’d still protect me.”<\/p>\n
The husband froze.<\/p>\n
“What?”<\/p>\n
Tears filled her eyes.<\/p>\n
“You used to jump out of bed.”<\/p>\n
Silence.<\/p>\n
“You used to check every door.”<\/p>\n
More silence.<\/p>\n
“You used to hold my hand and tell me everything was okay.”<\/p>\n
The husband sat down slowly.<\/p>\n
Suddenly understanding.<\/p>\n
This was never about a burglar.<\/p>\n
It was about feeling safe.<\/p>\n
Feeling loved.<\/p>\n
Feeling important.<\/p>\n
The wife wiped away a tear.<\/p>\n
“I know it sounds silly.”<\/p>\n
“It doesn’t.”<\/p>\n
She looked surprised.<\/p>\n
He took her hand.<\/p>\n
“When did you start feeling this way?”<\/p>\n
She laughed nervously.<\/p>\n
“Probably around the same time you started falling asleep watching television every night.”<\/p>\n
That made him laugh.<\/p>\n
Then she smiled.<\/p>\n
For the first time all night.<\/p>\n
The husband squeezed her hand.<\/p>\n
“You know what?”<\/p>\n
“What?”<\/p>\n
“If there ever is a burglar…”<\/p>\n
She waited.<\/p>\n
“I’ll still go downstairs in my boxers and save the day.”<\/p>\n
She laughed.<\/p>\n
“Really?”<\/p>\n
He nodded proudly.<\/p>\n
“Absolutely.”<\/p>\n
Then added:<\/p>\n
“Because no criminal wants to fight a middle-aged man wearing dinosaur pajamas.”<\/p>\n
The wife burst out laughing.<\/p>\n
And somewhere in the middle of that ridiculous conversation, both of them remembered something important:<\/p>\n
Sometimes people don’t need a hero.<\/p>\n
