“The group project ran late.”<\/p>\n
“My phone died.”<\/p>\n
Every explanation sounded reasonable on its own.<\/p>\n
Together, they didn’t.<\/p>\n
I hated the idea of tracking her, but after talking it over with her, I installed a GPS device in the car I owned and allowed her to drive.<\/p>\n
The following Tuesday evening, she texted me that she was studying for a chemistry exam.<\/p>\n

The car wasn’t at the library.<\/p>\n
It was parked in an industrial area nearly thirty miles away.<\/p>\n

Several teenagers were released to their parents.<\/p>\n
Others were taken home after officers contacted their families.<\/p>\n
My cousin was detained while investigators looked into reports of adults providing alcohol to minors and other possible violations.<\/p>\n
On the drive home, neither my daughter nor I spoke.<\/p>\n
Finally, she whispered,<\/p>\n
“I wasn’t drinking.”<\/p>\n
“I know.”<\/p>\n
“I saw the bottle was still sealed.”<\/p>\n
She started crying.<\/p>\n
“I wanted to leave.”<\/p>\n
“But everyone kept telling me not to be boring.”<\/p>\n
“I didn’t know what to do.”<\/p>\n
I reached over and held her hand.<\/p>\n
“I’m glad I came.”<\/p>\n
She looked down.<\/p>\n
“I’m sorry I lied.”<\/p>\n
“So am I,” I said.<\/p>\n
“But tonight could have ended very differently.”<\/p>\n
Over the next few weeks, we talked more honestly than we had in years.<\/p>\n
Instead of only focusing on punishment, we talked about peer pressure, trust, and how to get out of situations that felt unsafe.<\/p>\n
She admitted she’d been afraid I’d be angry if she called for a ride.<\/p>\n
I told her something I should have said long before.<\/p>\n
“If you ever feel trapped, scared, or in over your head, call me.”<\/p>\n
“I don’t care what time it is.”<\/p>\n
“We’ll deal with the consequences later.”<\/p>\n
“What matters first is getting you home safely.”<\/p>\n
Months later, she kept that promise.<\/p>\n
After another party started getting out of control, she called me instead of trying to handle it alone.<\/p>\n
I picked her up without a lecture.<\/p>\n
The conversation came the next morning.<\/p>\n
Trust wasn’t rebuilt overnight.<\/p>\n
But it was rebuilt.<\/p>\n
Looking back, the GPS tracker didn’t solve our problems.<\/p>\n
It simply led us to the conversation we should have been having all along.<\/p>\n
