A married couple was asleep when the wife suddenly woke her husband at **3 a.m.**
She grabbed his arm and whispered:
“Wake up!”
The husband groaned.
“What?”
“I think someone is downstairs.”
He immediately sat up.
“What?”
“I heard something.”
He grabbed a flashlight and reluctantly got out of bed.
“Stay here.”
His wife nodded.
He walked downstairs.
First, he checked the kitchen.
Nothing.
Then the living room.
Nothing.
He checked the hallway.
The back door was locked.
The windows were closed.
He even looked behind the curtains.
Still nothing.
After several tense minutes, he returned to the bedroom.
He sighed.
“There’s nobody here.”
His wife stared at him.
She didn’t look relieved.
Instead, she smiled strangely.
The husband frowned.
“What?”
She quietly said:
**”Good. Then you won’t have to explain why your shoes are wet.”**
He froze.
“My shoes?”
She pointed toward the bedroom floor.
His shoes were sitting beside the bed.
The bottoms were completely dry.
He looked down.
Then slowly turned toward the hallway.
“Wait…”
His wife whispered:
**”Exactly. So whose wet footprints did you just follow through the house?”**
The husband grabbed the flashlight again.
They both stared at the floor.
A trail of wet footprints led from the basement door…
straight toward their bedroom.
And then suddenly stopped.
Right beside the bed.
The husband swallowed.
“Call the police.”
His wife reached for her phone.
Then paused.
“Already did.”
He looked at her.
“When?”
She smiled nervously.
“While you were downstairs.”
Just then, they heard a loud knock at the front door.
Neither of them moved.
Then a police officer shouted from outside:
**”Police! Don’t open the door. We found someone hiding in your basement.”**
